Comedy and romance at pyjama party
The Pajama Game, Milton Musical Society,
Regent Centre, Christchurch
THIS
is one of those shows that has a score full of
well known songs and a reasonable libretto, yet
somehow lacks the charm of, say, Oklahoma or My
Fair Lady.
And perhaps that was the main reason why I was
watching the clock almost as much as those
employees in the Sleep Tite Pajama Factory, where
the withholding of a pay rise threatens to bring
production - and romance - to a grinding halt.
Also on the downside, some of the accents were
rather more Dorset than Iowa, and the frequent
playing in front of backcloths seemed a trifle
old-fashioned. |

However, the production was
well cast, with super characterisations. The
pairing of Richard Paskins (Hines) and Marie
Coltman (Gladys) ensured the comedy was in safe
hands, while romance was ensured - thankfully,
given the circumstances with Max White (Sid
Sorokin) and Michelle Moulin (Babe Williams),
since May also known as Mrs Max White. Perhaps
vocally Sid was a little out of Max's range, but
his acting more than compensated.
Colin Pile (Prez), Syd Young (Hasler) and
Christine Eastwood (Mabel) also made their
presence strongly felt, and there were effective
cameos too from Victoria Clark (Mae), Kelly Hall
(Poopsie) and Susy Senior (Brenda), while the
chorus were lively and their singing strong.Linda Kirkman
